Christian Money Help Weekly - Our Identity
We're diving into James!
This week marks the start of our verse-by-verse journey through the Book of James, and we begin with a single verse that gets to the heart of our identity.
"James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. To the twelve tribes in the Dispersion: Greetings" (James 1:1, ESV)
Think about how we introduce ourselves today. On LinkedIn, it's our job title and accomplishments. On Instagram or X, it's carefully curated highlights of travel pics, family moments, or that perfect bio that shows the "best" version of us. We all do it, right? Social media makes it so easy to craft an identity that says, "I'm successful, adventurous, and put-together."
But James? The brother of Jesus, a leader in the early church, someone who could have boasted about his family connections or authority... he skips all that. He simply calls himself a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. That's it. No resume. No titles. His entire identity boils down to this: I belong to Jesus. I serve Him.
How do we introduce ourselves? Is our identity defined by our job, our bank balance, or even the things we own (the car in the driveway) or experience (vacation to the sunny beach)?
What if, instead of defining ourselves by the things of this world, we were defined by our relationship with Christ? In a world obsessed with building personal brands, James reminds us that true freedom comes when our deepest identity is rooted in being His.
Servant. Loved. Redeemed.
As we kick off this series, take a moment: How does the way you see yourself line up with this? Does "servant of the Lord Jesus Christ" feel like the core of who you are? I'd love to hear your thoughts - hit reply and share!
Next week, we'll look at trials and joy in verses 2-4.
